You THINK crime is bad. You have NO IDEA.
Felons commit felonies. They consistently commit felonies. They start committing felonies as juveniles. I handle adult and juvenile court rooms. Most people in my adult courtrooms have a juvenile case or six in their background.
Juvenile court works differently than adult court, and with good reason. Juvenile proceedings are closed to the public for the protection of the kids. The IDEA is that kids can be rehabilitated after given services.
They usually….escalate until they end up in adult court, whether as a juvenile or when they “graduate”, aka turn 18. Why does this matter?
Because there’s a push now to say ‘violent crime is actually down’.
Crime stats, as The Wire demonstrated, can always be juked:
Crimes are way, WAY up. Here’s a link to a self-reported crime ‘violent victimization’ survey. It is garbage. Here is why:
FIRST: Domestic violence went through the roof during the pandemic. DV is rarely reported until 5-10 incidents. Second - think this through. PEOPLE WERE TRAPPED AT HOME DURING THE PANDEMIC. You think DV went down when people were stuck with each other. To quote the worst President since George W. Bush, “c’mon man.”
SECOND: a better statistic would be charged crimes. My jurisdiction is, like DV, through the roof on charges. Charges happen based on police reports, evidence. We have been actively trying not to charge for certain non-violent crimes (think homeless people going to gas stations they are banned from). Calling random people and asking them if they were raped in 2021 is a terrible way to see how crime is going.
THIRD: car thefts are out of control. Car thefts are not technically ‘violent’ crimes or robberies. However, here is how they usually go:
-minors steal a car (minors are the foot soldiers for gangs)
-they have guns in the car
-they have drugs in the car
-minors will get into beef with a rival gang, occasional shots fired
-police try to pull the car over, minor flee
-minors crash into another car, run
-minors resist arrest
Of ALL THE ABOVE, the violent crimes are if there’s a shooting and the resisting arrest. However, that does not matter:
-People whose car is stolen lose their car due to the crash, or worse: the crash is not bad, and the person gets the car back. HOWEVER…they cannot drive it because it could now be targeted by the rival gang
-powder drugs lead to OD’s via fentanyl
-guns are self-explanatory
-many minor drivers, passengers, and innocent bystanders end up injured or dead. Happens ALL THE TIME
-resisting arrest can lead to injury or death. We had a summer of riots/a color revolution started because some asshat resisted arrest.
Where does this lead us?
-Have to support DA’s that will ENFORCE penalties;
-We need every state having a three strike (three felony convictions and life in prison) law;
-voting for those that are against crime and pro police.
