How to start public speaking

The art of bending reality with talk

You want me to what? Talk in public?!?

Public speaking is easy.

It is a sword that allows me to cut through the bullshit of society. I can walk into any room and know I'm the best speaker there. ANY room. Here are a few ways to get started.

You need a REASON to start speaking.

I was the best man in a wedding and had a public facing job. I was tired of shaking when walking into a room, knowing I had to talk. The feeling in the pit of your stomach that everyone is watching, judging. The anxiety building all morning, then afternoon. I had to fix my problem.

What is YOUR reason? Find one. Maybe its work, or an event, or being confident to walk up and talk to a six at the BAYC conference. Find it and use it.

Where will you public speak?

COVID through a wrench into public speaking. Hopefully the Free people can keep the communists at bay long enough to reopen everything. The best ways to get experience:

CAREERS

1. Find a career that requires public speaking. Similar to above, if I have a reason, my livelihood, I'll find a way. I'm a prosecutor and speak in court every weekday. I did that purposely.

   Other careers that make sense:

   SALES: Force yourself to cold call, knock on doors. Use each interaction as affirmation you are improving, because you are. Sales will get you speaking fast and with purpose. Highly recommend.

   PREACHER: Another you HAVE to speak career. Bonus points for saving people from eternal damnation.

   CRISIS HOTLINE PERSON: Work for the new national suicide hotline, 988. You get unlimited public speaking experience in a high stakes arena. DOUBLE Bonus points for learning persuasion AND saving a life or two.

ACTIVITIES

1. Improv comedy. BowTiedSalesGuy and I are improv alums; his group is still performing, mine had a COVID breakup. Improv has many benefits. I outlined them here.

2. Toastmasters. I am a Toastmaster. Joining a club gives you a few minutes every other week to speak, plus instant feedback. The longer you are with a club, the better the feedback. People will help you find your style. Toastmasters is about $100 a year. Paying will also make you want to speak to get your money's worth.
