What did I wish I knew?
It’s hard to know everything you’ll run into when you’ve never ran into it before.
Like Mike Tyson once said, “everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face”
One thing I didn’t account for was how weird my prospects would initially be.
I am building a book of business from scratch, I should have assumed I wasn’t going to have all winners to start.
That being said, I’ve had multiple people try to send me links that I’m pretty sure are phishing.
They called me, we talked, I set up a meeting to start the relationship, and they send me some weird “click here” email.
Is this what it’s like to be a woman and get unsolicited cock pics?
Ive had a few people call me and I’ve told them to call 911 instead. It’s been less than three weeks.
How many were legit emergencies? No idea, probably some bipolar/schitzo people having a moment. Still, crazy.
I didn’t realize how poorly I spent my time
I’ve had to break some BAD time habits from my government days. Yes I was an overworked prosecutor, but it appears I could have done way more.
Time on X (so addicting), texts, scrolling, driving excess amounts of time for no reason (aka car procrastination)…all things I’ve found myself doing and been like wait, what are you doing? You have no money coming in.
There are many ways to get some hourly work
My friend has been having me cover cases the past few weeks. Did not realize that was a paid gig. It’s been decent.
I have picked up some appointed work when the public defenders cannot pick up the case due to conflict. I knew this was a thing, but there are many conflicts in my county, which has been good.

I’m essentially a general practitioner right now
“Can you do this type of case?” If I need money, you have it, and I’m familiar with it, yes, yes I can.
Most clients I have are in my wheelhouse of criminal, but I’m learning family and have a few of those. Fortunately I have mentors who are helping me, because learning a new area of law is a thing.
Everyone who signs up understands im new ish to it, they won’t be billed for learning time, and my trial skills will be valuable given many civil attorneys don’t know the rules of evidence well (so I’ve been told).
The freedom to be me has been like taking a breath of fresh air after being in a strip club for a night
I feel ALIVE! Each day brings its own new challenges, time constraints, learning opportunities.
I’m blessed to be able to do what I’m doing, and trying to enjoy it even though it’s hard and a seven day a week grind.
