Crime statistics are under counted due to juvenile crime. Juvenile courts are closed courts, meaning no public. Most crime statistics focus on adult felonies, and with good reason - those are your murders, rapes, running naked in the yard on meth busts.
My jurisdiction has an almost 40%-50% jump in juvenile crime year over year.
The juvenile court system is tiered, too - my jurisdiction has three layers prior to a minor actually having a court case.
Bottom layer - do some community service
Middle layer - we will hook you up with services, have you check in a couple of times over a 12 month period, do some community service
Third layer - We are monitoring you closely, you need to do what we ask or you will go to court.
Top of the wedding cake - court!
The above also lends itself to the cases in court being more serious than before. Many are now higher class felonies (i.e. closer to murder). TONS and TONS of car thefts, possession of a firearm, discharge of a firearm. 20 years ago it would be the habitual Best Buy CD thief in court. NOW it is the habitual armed 16 year old felon in court, and the above tiers to handle the non-violent/first time offenders.
We have internal stats that we relay to the appropriate higher ups (my bosses’ boss, the local Mayor, my private moments with the Lord) and they are all up and to the right. UP AND TO THE RIGHT. MORE VIOLENT CRIME.
The kids are starting younger, too. 13, 14 year olds committing drive-by shootings. Gangs are smart. They know courts are going woke, and minors under 15 will probably not go to prison (juvenile prison is a joke but that’s for another time/trying not to doxx myself here). Gang leaders order hits and minors carry them out. The ring videos are disturbing and also hilarious. They usually look something like this:
Unfortunately they sometimes hit innocent people, killing them.
The media is too communist and/or stupid to cover the problem. Fox showing minors running amuck in Philly is the tip of the iceberg.
Remember the above is most likely NOT being considered when you are told crime is up. Crime is WAY, WAY UP.
