“What does Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion….REALLY MEAN?”
Two weeks ago I was meeting fellow presenters for an upcoming conference. One of my fellow presenters was discussing the real meaning of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), as if this was a mystery like hieroglyphics in the 1700’s.
As I listened to her drone on about nothing, I realized how bad public speaking talks and workshops have become.
This person WAS BEING PAID to discuss a topic the media, our government, and the rest of the CABAL never shut up about. What was the secret meaning of DEI? I didn’t go to watch the eventual presentation, I could barely stay awake hearing about the topic.
The other speakers were dog shit as well
I read almost every self help book I could from my late teens through mid 20’s. I have engrained the principles of successful people into my life - I stay out of trouble, workout, say what I’m grateful for, etc. Most of that stuff is corny, but it works and it works for me.
No need for Kong to have motivation, I’m good now. It has been a few years, almost a decade, since I last went down the self-help well.
IT IS THE SAME AS IT WAS.
A couple of the speakers were “providing hope” or “a roadmap to success”. I’m a lawyer and should probably know this…but is Carnegie getting ripped off and repurposed on the reg and everyone is ok with it/no copyright issues?
These speakers were BRUTAL. Nothing original whatsoever.
“find your purpose”
“follow your energy”
“Do the hardest things first” (Mrs. Kong does not always subscribe to this while I am poking her with my morning wood)
PEOPLE BUY SELF-HELP STUFF OVER AND OVER AND DO NONE OF IT
Pretty sure Bull has said something similar, but man -
These speakers were BASTIONS OF BORING with the same messages I’ve heard for decades.
I drew a decent crowd because I’m:
-interesting
-funny
-have a unique presentation (parts of which you will see in my upcoming course)
People came up afterwards and complimented me on the originality, as well that they had fun. My presentation is a combination of a few subjects I have learned, with a few alterations to make them mine.
Medium work on creating something new from what I already knew, yet blew the doors off the place.
The bar is low!
When you have to speak and give presentations from time to time:
Put thought into them. What message(s) do you want to send?
Can you combine a few skills you have (speaking, former dance background, math whiz) and teach them as one?
Can you become an expert at Powerpoint or Prezi? The presentations I saw were BLAND, like the speakers and light lunch sandwiches.
Come up with a surprise! Maybe the GURU techniques did not work for you, but something else did. What did, or why did they take a while to click?
I am aghast at how bad the other speakers and presentations were. Take time and come up with something unique, people will be floored AND happy.
DEI is the death of originality - breathe life into a room and enjoy the results!
NAMASTE,
KONG
